UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan was moved to create
the Task Force on Women, Girls and HIV/AIDS by the profound
weight of AIDS’ impact on women and girls in the region
with the highest infection rates. The aim of the Task
Force is to catalyze and intensify action on women,
girls and HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa, positioning it
as a central priority for action by the United Nations
system, in collaboration with governments and civil
society. The Task Force focuses on the nine countries
in Southern Africa most affected by HIV/AIDS: Botswana,
Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa,
